Abstract

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) has emerged as a prominent intervention for treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), employing bilateral stimulation to process traumatic memories and alleviate associated symptoms. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluates the efficacy of EMDR in reducing PTSD symptoms and improving overall well-being in individuals with PTSD. Through an extensive literature review, the meta-analysis synthesizes effect sizes from RCTs assessing the effectiveness of EMDR compared to control conditions (e.g., waitlist, supportive therapy) in targeting PTSD symptoms, including re-experiencing, avoidance, negative alterations in cognition and mood, and hyperarousal. Additionally, it examines potential moderators of treatment outcomes, such as session length, therapist experience, treatment fidelity, and participant characteristics (e.g., trauma type, comorbidities), to enhance understanding of the factors influencing the effectiveness of EMDR for PTSD.
