The Efficacy of Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Chronic Pain Management: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
Abstract
Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs) have gained recognition as effective approaches for managing chronic pain, offering holistic strategies to alleviate suffering and improve quality of life. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluates the efficacy of MBIs in reducing pain intensity and enhancing pain-related outcomes in individuals with chronic pain conditions. Through a comprehensive review of the literature, the meta-analysis synthesizes effect sizes from RCTs assessing the effectiveness of MBIs compared to control conditions (e.g., treatment as usual, active control interventions) in targeting pain severity, pain interference, physical functioning, and psychological distress. Additionally, it examines potential moderators of treatment outcomes, such as intervention duration, session format (group vs. individual), mindfulness practice intensity, and participant characteristics (e.g., pain duration, comorbidities), to better understand the factors influencing the effectiveness of MBIs for chronic pain management.
