Abstract

Motivational Interviewing (MI) has emerged as a widely used approach for treating Substance Use Disorders (SUDs). This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluates the efficacy of MI in reducing substance use and improving overall treatment outcomes in individuals with SUDs. Through a thorough review of the literature, the meta-analysis synthesizes effect sizes from RCTs assessing the effectiveness of MI compared to control conditions (e.g., treatment as usual, standard counseling) in targeting substance use behaviors, including frequency, severity, and abstinence rates. Additionally, it examines potential moderators of treatment outcomes, such as intervention duration, therapist proficiency, level of motivation, and substance type, to better understand the factors influencing the effectiveness of MI for SUDs.
