The Effectiveness of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Treating Depression: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
Abstract
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a widely used psychological intervention for treating depression. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examines the effectiveness of CBT in reducing symptoms of depression. Drawing from a comprehensive review of the literature, the meta-analysis synthesizes effect sizes from RCTs that assess the efficacy of CBT compared to control conditions (e.g., waitlist, treatment as usual) in alleviating depressive symptoms. Additionally, it explores potential moderators of intervention effectiveness, such as treatment duration, format (individual vs. group), therapist involvement, and participant characteristics (e.g., age, severity of depression), to better understand the factors that influence the outcomes of CBT for depression.
