Abstract

Physical activity has been identified as a modifiable lifestyle factor that may promote cognitive health and reduce the risk of cognitive decline in older adults. This systematic review and meta-analysis examine the relationship between physical activity and cognitive functioning in older adults, including aspects such as memory, executive function, and processing speed. Drawing from longitudinal studies, randomized controlled trials, and cross-sectional analyses, the review synthesizes evidence on the effects of different types, intensities, and durations of physical activity on cognitive outcomes. Additionally, it explores potential mechanisms underlying the physical activity-cognition relationship, such as increased cerebral blood flow, neuroplasticity, and neurotrophic factors.
