The Impact of Exercise on Mental Health in Older Adults: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
Abstract
Mental health issues, including depression and anxiety, are prevalent among older adults, and physical exercise has been proposed as a potential intervention to improve psychological well-being in this population. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examines the impact of exercise on mental health outcomes among older adults. Drawing from a comprehensive review of the literature, the meta-analysis synthesizes effect sizes from RCTs assessing the efficacy of various exercise interventions, such as aerobic exercise, resistance training, and mind-body exercises, in reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Additionally, it explores potential moderators of intervention efficacy, such as exercise intensity, frequency, and duration, as well as participant characteristics, to identify factors that may influence the effectiveness of exercise interventions for promoting mental health in older adults.
