Abstract

Depression is a prevalent mental health disorder with significant societal impact, and physical exercise has been proposed as a potential non-pharmacological intervention. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigates the impact of physical exercise on depression symptoms and severity. Drawing from a systematic review of the literature, the meta-analysis synthesizes effect sizes from RCTs examining various types, durations, and intensities of exercise interventions. Additionally, it explores potential moderators of intervention efficacy, such as participant demographics, exercise adherence, and intervention format. The findings shed light on the effectiveness of physical exercise as a therapeutic strategy for managing depression.
