The Impact of Social Media Use on Adolescent Mental Health: A Scoping Review
Abstract
Social media has become an integral part of adolescents' daily lives, but its impact on mental health remains a topic of concern and debate. This scoping review examines the relationship between social media use and adolescent mental health, exploring both positive and negative effects. It synthesizes evidence from cross-sectional studies, longitudinal research, and qualitative investigations to elucidate the diverse ways in which social media may influence adolescents' psychological well-being, including effects on self-esteem, body image, peer relationships, and mood disorders. Additionally, the review identifies gaps in the literature and proposes future research directions to better understand the complex interplay between social media and adolescent mental health.
